Ontario Research and Development Challenge Fund

The Ontario Research and Development Challenge Fund (ORDCF) is an $800 million program with a mandate to promote research excellence and partnerships between research institutions and business.

Who's eligible for ORDCF funding?

Funding is open to research institutions including hospitals, universities and colleges  on a competitive basis.

The Challenge Fund contributes up to 22.2% of the costs of the project with the remainder coming from the applicant and their partners.

What's eligible for funding?

The ORDCF will support:

  • longer-term discovery research of interest to the private sector;
  • shorter-term research with more immediate industrial applications.

The ORDCF will not support:

  • contract R&D and clinical trials.

Since the Fund was established in 1997 it has:

  • Invested $435 million in 103 research projects worth close to $1.5 billion
  • Supported

    proteomics and photonics, as
    well as esta-
    blished sectors
    like biomedical,
    agri-food, communications
    and information technology and automotive.
